Heaven Knows (stylised in sentence case as Heaven knows) is the debut studio album by English singer-songwriter and producer PinkPantheress. It was released on 10 November 2023 through Warner Music UK and Warner Records UK. The album's lead single "Boy's a liar Pt. 2" was officially released on 3 February 2023 as the lead single from the album. "Mosquito" was officially released on 29 September as the album's second single, while the album's third single "Capable of love" was released on 12 October. Heaven knows follows her major-label debut mixtape to hell with it, which was released two years prior in October 2021. Upon its release, Heaven knows received positive reviews from music critics and fans alike.
Background and release[]
In an interview with Pitchfork (released in August 2022), it was said that her debut album was planned to be released in early 2023. PinkPantheress told Pitchfork that she's "scared of putting out music now" and that "there’s more on the line, there’s more pressure, people expect a certain standard."[1] In another interview with NME (released on 3 February 2023), the same day in which she released "Boy's a liar Pt. 2" as the lead single from her then-untitled debut studio album, PinkPantheress expressed her desire to make "a shift towards other styles of music" and revealed plans to potentially release her debut album later that year.[2]
PinkPantheress had teased the album multiple times online, before officially announcing the release of "Mosquito" as the second single from the album on 29 September. In a radio interview with Hot 97, she accidentally revealed that the album may possibly be released in October.[3] This turned out to be false after the album's cover, official title, and release date were revealed on 12 October 2023 after a countdown was added to her website,[4][5] in tandem with the announcement and release of "Capable of love" as the second single from the album. She has stated that the project is an "accumulation of music [she has] made over the last two years".[6] To be able to announce and present her debut album, she described the news as an "intense insane moment".
Theme[]
In a press release where Heaven knows was described by PinkPantheress, she stated:
"The record is about grief for a loss but being at peace with yourself in your aloneness. Journeying from hell into purgatory, but I’m ok with being there."
- PinkPantheress for NME[7]
In the same press release, Heaven knows was also said to be about self-reflection and sees PinkPantheress exploring various kinds of relationships such as romantic, parasocial, materialistic pursuits, grief, and finding contentment within loneliness.[7]
Promotion[]
The offical tracklist of Heaven knows was revealed through PinkPantheress's Discord server on 30 October, although the album's tracklist was accidentally leaked by Merchbar prior. To promote Heaven knows, two separate videos were uploaded to PinkPantheress's YouTube channel: the trailer for the album on 1 November and the film for the album on 7 November.
Bayy was tasked with creating and producing a full marketing campaign for the release of PinkPantheress' debut album - 'Heaven knows'.
This roll out consisted on three impactful activations, including:
1) Implementing guerilla-style fly postering tactics and strategically placing dove helium balloons across iconic London landmarks to align with the visuals of the album creative.
- Set outside BOXPARK on Shoreditch High Street, fans needed to unveil the hidden track list on the album locked inside a huge wooden chest. Fans embarked on a quest to sift through 1000 keys, searching for the elusive one that unlocks the mystery box. Each fan was granted a single opportunity to test their chosen key and access the contents within the chest.
- Custom escape room activation where the entrance emulated the visuals from her music video 'Capable of Love'. Fans used all five senses to try and find the key to the grand chest and make an escape! PinkPantheress then surprised fans with a meet and greet.
