In a TikTok that was posted on 22 August, PinkPantheress previewed the final version of "Mosquito",which was originally recorded in 2022 with the video having a title saying: "first album single iktr" & the caption saying: "decixing which unreleased should come out next is like choosinf which nesprssso pod to use in the morning . it will be with you shortly🤔🧐 #fyp #music". A month later, she again previewed the final version again with the caption "mosquito out so soon i cant believe how long it's been it’s actually a crime im so sorry #fyp #music"[1]

On 27 September, PinkPantheress posted on Twitter that the song would be released that Friday, with the tweet reading: “i just had a dream i was dead~ Mosquito is out on Friday - im ngl it took so long but y’know but this is my favourite song of mine so give grace❤️”[2]

The songs music video was released on the same day as the track and features Charithra Chandran, India Amarteifio and Yara Shahidi.[3] The video was directed by Sophie Muller.[4] In the instagram post about the music video she said that the music video was influenced by the 1961 film Breakfast at Tiffany's specifically where Audrey Hepburn is outside of Tiffany's with a croissant and coffee.[5][6] The video was described as a throwback to the 2000's and also plays homage to the rom-com trope of a shopping spree and makeover.[7]

Composition[]

The track was co-written and produced by Greg Kurstin and leans into "noughties R&B" for what PinkPantheress called her "favourite song". It was first teased on the video-sharing platform TikTok on 12 June 2022 with a heavier drum and bass sound and later again on 12 October 2022 with lighter vocals accompanied by a bossa nova style production. The final song sees the singer laying vocals over a "drum and bass beat" and combines it with a "colourful noughties R&B aesthetic". Her voice was described as "understated" and classy, while the production takes a more "club-focussed" approach.
